Toulouse make their mark in opening match of League 1 season

A FIRST half blitz saw Toulouse Olympique make a statement in their return to a United Kingdom-based regular season competition with a 54-6 win over Coventry Bears.

In the club’s first match at their new home, Stade Ernest Argeles, halfback Danny Hulme scored four tries during the opening period as Toulouse Olympique surged to a 36-6 half-time lead.

Hulme scored the club’s opening try of the 2016 Kingstone Press League 1 championship in the fourth minute to give the home supporters plenty to look forward to over the coming weeks.

Toulouse host Hemel Stags on Saturday before tackling Gloucester All Golds in their fourth round Challenge Cup clash at Stade Ernest Argeles on March 19-20.

The 2014-15 French Federation of Rugby League’s Elite 1 champions dominated possession early in the match.

Hulme and co. capitalised on their opportunities early in the match and extended their lead to 24-0 with four tries in the opening 22 minutes.

The Bears threw everything they could at Toulouse in attack but couldn’t find a way through the home side’s defence until the 31st minute when a kick bounced off a TO defender and landed into a Bears’ attacker’s hands.

Tries to Hulme, centre Greg White and fullback Mark Kheirallah saw Toulouse extend their lead to 48-6 in the 55th minute.

Kheirallah finished with a perfect record with the boot, kicking nine goals.
