LIMOUX Grizzlies will take on AS Carcassonne in the 2015-16 FFR XIII Elite 1 grand final on May 21 after both teams registered semi-final victories.
The Grizzlies overcame a determined Lezignan Sangliers 22-18 in the opening match of the FFR XIII Elite 1’s semi-finals at Foix on the weekend to reach their second final of the season, after featuring in the Lord Derby Cup final last month.
A spectacular golden point field goal from fullback AS Carcassonne Clement Soubeyras broke the deadlock and the hearts of the St Esteve XIII Catalans fans in the other semi-final after the scores were locked at 16-16 at full-time.
Carcassonne looked in control for most of the match, and led 16-4 before St Esteve XIII Catalans winger Jordan Sigismeau and five-eighth Stan Robin brought the match to life by crossing the stripe inside the final five minutes.
Remy Marginet added the extras on both occasions to send the match into extra-time.
It didn’t take long for Carcassonne to claim the match as Maxime Greseque, unable to take a field goal attempt, shifted the ball wide before it returned to Soubeyras who delivered the fatal blow to give his side a 17-16 victory.
The local rivals will face-off for the 2016 Elite 1 championship at Albi on May 21.
